An overview from my cold and windy porch tonight.

Marilyn is Marilyn Mook, one of my professors and friends from Michigan State University who passed away a couple of years ago. She used to donate a quilt to the Michigan Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics' (formerly Michigan Dietetic Association's) state conference every year to help our Association make money for dietetic student scholarships. I made this quilt and am donating it to the Association to honor her memory (and hopefully make money for the same cause).

Marilyn had a nice perennial garden that ringed the edge of her fenced yard, thus the name of the quilt. This quilt will be given to one lucky ticket buyer this Friday. I had better get working on the binding!

Our new "addition", Mr. Shorty.

We named this kitty Shorty because he has a short tail and always hung around our house. (His family named him Fred, but he'll always be Shorty to us.) He was a super friendly neighborhood cat, but for the longest time we didn't know where he lived. One summer while we were walking the neighborhood, we figured out who his owners were.

Both last winter and this winter have been horribly cold, and the owners would let him go outside. He would come to our house, a few houses away, to get warm. One time we brought him home, and the owners said he hadn't been staying home much and they were thinking of bringing him to the shelter. (What??? You guys are letting him out in zero temps!) DH decided right then and there we would adopt him, and they were OK with it. He is a very nice cat, and gets along fine with the other cats (but Miss Rose gets bent out of shape about it once in awhile). He's about 13 or 14 years old.

Next is our baby quilt project. We have a pregnant co-worker who did not want to know the baby's sex, so that left us quilty ladies in a quandary. What color to make the baby quilt? Fortunately Deb and I saw a kit and cute pattern from Renee Nanneman that was just perfect for either a boy or a girl. And on sale, too!

I bought some Pennsylvania Dutch quilt blocks, from a woman who dated them at about the late 1890's, early 1900's. They have that distinctive bright mustardy yellow with a tiny red print. You don't see a lot of reproduction yellows as bright as these; I just love the bold colors (the yellow is the closest to real yellow in the 3rd photo down). I'm not sure what I will do with them at the moment, but just looking and admiring is fun!

What I did not count on was some little mouse got to these blocks before me, and made a very pretty house from some of the red and yellow blocks!

More mouse work.

It will be easy to repair these blocks, but not so easy to find the right yellow. I have found a couple of reproductions that could work, but the hand of the new fabric is so thick and stiff compared to the older fabric that I don't want to go that route yet.

There are people who specialize in selling older fabrics, but I have found the yellow to be on the rare side, thus the price is high (50 dollars or more a yard, anyone?) And they sell the fabric in small bits (i.e. 15 inches by 20) but 25 dollars for a small hunk of fabric? Yikes. I still hold out hope that I'll find a nice stash of a variety of mustard yellows and bright reds that someone will beg me to take off their hands. Hah.

So, did you guess Christmas cards?

That's what the quilt block was for (and by the way, it was my husband's idea...I never would have picked an 8-pointed star as a "quick thing to throw together" to use to make cards! I had to sew it by hand, because I had to get the pieces to fit and did not have a pattern or template. Back to Geometry 101.)

We have been making our own Christmas cards since the early 1980's (one year when my husband was swamped with work and had absolutely no free time to fit in Christmas card designing, I had to buy cards. They were cute cards, but I felt so guilty that I wrote a "sorry this is not a homemade card this year" inside. My friends thought that was just too funny.)Vicky Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13580450164312941983noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156479851215397815.post-76612360861532701852014-12-13T14:36:00.003-05:002014-12-13T18:42:48.552-05:00Secret Projects

Yay! I finally got Aunt Pat's quilt done. As you may recall, this is a quilt that her grandmother made in the early 1960's, we figured. I repaired the shredded patches (there were lots of them), and put knit fusible interfacing on part of the back where the backing fabric was gone (just to keep the guts in). The last thing I did (in the 2 days prior to Aunt Pat leaving Michigan--they only stay for 4 days or so) was tie a new back on the quilt with no. 8 perle cotton, and put a new binding on. That binding was a bear, but I did it all by machine due to time limitations. Got it done at 1 a.m. of the day we were meeting them for breakfast at 9 and surprising them with the quilt. Yikes! But I think Aunt Pat likes it!
I finished up this quilt, too. "All" I needed to do was bind it and sew a sleeve on the back. Now it hangs in my stairwell overlooking my living room. It is about 60 by 70 inches. Now I need to get to work on something more seasonally appropriate to hang in this space. Something orange, perhaps?
So where have I been? Outside, of course! This summer has been one of the nicest I can remember, temperature-wise and with lower humidity. Makes you want to stay outdoors all the time! Even when I am at work, I make a point to at least walk outside around the building at lunch time.

I'm about two-thirds of the way done quilting this one. I thought I could get by with machine quilting in the ditch between the blocks, but it was not enough. At least the stitching between blocks is holding everything together while I hand quilt the logs of the blocks (the blocks are about 4 inches wide).

I have more to report, from a Harriet Hargrave lecture at our guild, to the AQS show in Grand Rapids mid-August. Stay tuned!Vicky Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13580450164312941983noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156479851215397815.post-65257487563562492652014-06-02T12:56:00.003-04:002014-06-02T13:29:36.970-04:00Port Huron Treasures

We took a day jaunt to Port Huron this past weekend (it is 3 hours due East of us, and home of the Blue Water Bridge, an entranceway to Canada). We went to visit and have lunch with a few of my husband's cousins. I remember this quilt top from a visit 25 years ago to cousin Joanne's home, and she still had it in the same spot! It was made by her grandmother, which makes the top around 100 years old. Love the colors!

I did not touch the purse, but can you see the rolled fabric with black behind it? I'm quite sure they used a single jersey knit. That rolling of cut jersey edges drives you nuts when trying to make a t-shirt. The artist used it to their advantage in this piece. And last but not least, a first for our neighborhood pond. Baby geese! (See the yellow fuzz balls behind mom and dad?) We don't see a lot of baby ducks or geese because our pond is a little to "hub-bubby" with lots of kids playing in the water. But this year we lucked out. The Geese family has even been walking up to our bird feeder area (about 20 feet from the pond) and scrounging around for leftovers. I bought this cute set of printed blocks late last year and had it on hand, knowing the baby was due in May. My niece found out she was having a girl, and the new mom really likes pink, so I thought it would work well. It could really work with many colors of sashing.

I usually don't buy printed panels, but this one was so darned cute! It is "Hello World" from Cori Dantini. I cut the blocks apart, squared them up best I could (they are 10.5 by 11.5 inches), added the sashing and cornerstones, and simply quilted it.

And this Lenten Rose had better get it's act together and bloom, because Lent is almost over! It usually blooms early to mid-March. Actually, this poor plant in my rock garden was still covered with over a foot of "roof snow" just 2 weeks ago. What is roof snow? That's snow that gets hurriedly shoveled off the roof in a big pile after you hear report after report of multiple home and business roofs collapsing due to excess snow weight.Vicky Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13580450164312941983noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156479851215397815.post-12463637588770820282014-01-21T23:04:00.003-05:002014-01-21T23:04:56.274-05:00Next on the DocketOur family Christmas party was canceled over a month ago due to a snowstorm that made traveling dangerous. We finally got together this past Sunday at our home! It was weird last month putting up and taking down Christmas decorations and lights without anyone but us seeing them (we didn't want them up for 6 weeks!) So now that the party's over, it's time to get some stitching done!

This Broken Star Log Cabin quilt top (pattern from Edyta Sitar of Laundry Basket Quilts) was made a few years back. My friend Debbie S. worked on one for herself, too, back when we used to stitch every other Monday at her house. With steady stitching from 10 to 12:30, then 1 to 3 pm, we could only get 6 blocks done per time. These are 4-inch blocks, people! Simple sewing but time intensive. A closer view:

I plan to machine quilt in the ditch between the 4-inch blocks. Then I'll decide if more stitching is needed.

I also have another quilt which will get some simple hand quilting. This top was a block of the month from Quilts Plus in Kalamazoo, from quite a few years ago. These are also 4-inch blocks. Debbie S. has one of these, too. I'm glad we stitched together, because we had to read the directions for each block a few times, and double check with each other so we were assured that we wouldn't goof up.

Work so gets in the way sometimes!

I was lucky to win the center of this quilt in our quilt bee's block exchange in the early1990's (every year Vicky R would make one of these Santas as her "block"; there was way more work put into it than you normally would think of as a quilt block. We all wished we would win a Santa, and for two years in a row, I did!)

I added the borders, snowflakes (sequins) and quilting. It hangs with honor by my front door every year.

This is the second Santa block I won, the following year. Yay me! I plan to include this in a "someday" Christmas quilt with other miscellaneous Christmas blocks.

And my contribution to treat night at the Grand Rapids Camera Club (my husband belongs); a batch also came with me to my quilt bee's treat night. The homely ones stayed home. These gingerbread people were easy. I bought the already formed and frozen dough boys from Gordon Food Service, baked and decorated them with royal frosting (Martha Stewart's recipe).

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to my quilt buddies!Vicky Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13580450164312941983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156479851215397815.post-9981616149317953342013-11-03T23:02:00.003-05:002013-11-03T23:02:58.129-05:00Quilts at ArtPrize 2013Never too late to show you photos of quilts that showed up in this fall's ArtPrize competition!
I am so excited that Ann Loveless of Frankfort, Michigan won the first place in the popular vote at ArtPrize 2013. Her landscape "Sleeping Bear Dune Lakeshore" was done from a photo in northern Michigan. It was fused raw edge appliqué from batiks. I heard comments from people who could not believe it was fabric; they thought it was either a painting or a photograph.
The next is a quilt made from wood! The detail is amazing. Fraser Smith's quilt made it into the Top 10 popular vote. Here's a close-up. See the "stitching"?
Do any of you remember those signs painted on roofs and
sides of old barns that told you to “See Rock City” as a vacation destination?
Well, those barns and signs were the inspiration for this quilt. (As it turns
out, Rock City is in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. I guess my folks thought that was
a little too far to go for a trip with 4 kids.)

I was looking forward to seeing this quilt in person,

Julie is a quilter
from Tennessee, but originally from Michigan, with family in West Michigan. She managed to make it to the Grand Rapids AQS

get married the same weekend.

There is a lot more to this quilt than meets the eye

Each barn was free-pieced. No pattern used.

There is one barn per month of the year, with details near each
barn to hint at the corresponding month’s weather.

The quilt was put together with sashing between the blocks,
but not finished, because a voice in her head told her something was not right.
She took the quilt apart and realized that the fabulous free-pieced barns
needed a free-pieced sky to go with the barn’s season. Much better!

My biggest sewing and quilting influence was my grandma, Hazel Millard. She sewed everything. She had a fancy brown Singer with all of the cams (I'm not sure where that sewing machine ended up).

My grandpa Ace and grandma Hazel, about mid-1960's.

Here's a few fun things about grandma:

She LOVED turquoise. See the trim on the house? See the dress fabric? She also had a turquoise couch and walls of light turquoise.

Those retro cotton prints (fancy coffee pots, cups and saucers in turquoise and brown) you see nowadays? Those were grandma's kitchen curtains.

She sewed her own clothes. There were few plus-sized stores to shop in. And, she didn't drive.

Her house was small, but that didn't stop anyone from stopping over and filling up the house. There were times the grandkids had to crawl over each other in the living room to get to an unoccupied piece of carpet to sit on.

One year grandma made all the men and boys in the family corduroy long-sleeved shirts for Christmas. All different colors. And with the scraps, she made a couple of baby-sized throws to use when babies visited her.

Corduroy throw; each square about 2.5 inches, randomly pieced.

Grandma wanted to sell this throw in a yard sale one year. I told her I would buy it from her, but she said "why would you want that old thing?" "Because you made it grandma!" She gave it to me. It needs a few repairs, but I love it.

Well-loved (and many time washed) little throw.

Grandma gave me my first folding cardboard cutting board. I used it for years.

So grandma, thank you for the inspiration and encouragement for the life-long hobbies of sewing and quilting!

These were too cool not to share with you. I had never seen these designs before in antique shops or elsewhere; I wonder if they weren't as common as the all-embroidered dish towels.
Don't these look straight out of the 50's and 60's? Doing housework in heels is a myth, or at least my mom and relatives did not fit this image!

I neglected to take a photo of the back, but all of these were very neatly hand appliquéd with teeny, tiny stitches.

Aren't these great colors and designs? Has anyone seen these before?Vicky Fhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13580450164312941983noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3156479851215397815.post-67591051329774199912013-06-04T23:14:00.001-04:002013-06-04T23:14:15.593-04:00Yellow & Grey baby quilt delivered

Well, baby Rosa decided to arrive nearly a month early, even before the planned work shower and potluck. Fortunately we had a zippy quilter (thanks, Margo) and a zippy binder (thanks, Nancy) so we could have our special quilt ready for the cutie pie.
My rock garden is shaping up. I had a treat a couple of days ago while hand watering this garden. A male ruby-throated hummingbird started sipping from the above columbine, and I tried to stay still and watch. Then Mr. Hummer came over to me to inspect my dripping sprayer. This is a new "old" quilt top I just purchased from Ann Hermes, set 3 blocks by 7 blocks. The fabrics are estimated to be from the late 1800's. Each block was hand-stitched, but the blocks were sewn together by machine. The quilter, either the block maker or the one who sewed it together, apparently did not know the definition of "square" (as in, each side should be equal). Pretty wonky.

This is what gave me a giggle. I thought this grey fabric was all one piece, but look again. Someone sewed nine pieces together to get this piece. Isn't this a riot? You're telling me that the stitcher ran out of colorful fabric scraps and said, "oh well, I'll just stitch these greys back together". I think I would have been tempted to cut up a shirt just to get some contrast!
Finished top with some sunshine effects. It's always a challenge to get group blocks to fit together nicely. I gave myself some wiggle room by cutting the squares and strips for everyone, and making the strips slightly wider than needed so the blocks could be trimmed to the same size.
And in keeping with the yellow theme, here are my lovely Trout lilies. These are freebies that showed up in my yard one year, (they love the cedar chips) and they keep coming back every spring.
